NEED THE EASE OF WIRE-O, BUT THE COST OF PERFECT BINDING?
This is a common question. At E & M Bindery, we have two compelling solutions:
The first is layflat adhesive binding. Layflat adhesive binding features a unique detached cover and is the perfect solution for jobs without large production budgets that need to lie flat. When planning layflat adhesive binding jobs, keep copy at least 1/2” away from the spine on the inside cover and on the first and last pages of the text. For layflat adhesive bound jobs on coated stock, maximize your project’s page pull strength buy requesting super-strong PUR GLUE.
The second is combo job planning. Consider a hypothetical job where your customer wants a 10,000-book project to lie flat. Although they would prefer Wire-O, they only have the budget for perfect binding. One last bit of information is that 5% of the users of the book deserve special treatment.
An out-of-the box solution would be to Wire-O bind 500 of the books and run the balance perfect bound. This would give the top 5% the preferred binding method and keep the project’s cost low.
When planning combo jobs, it’s important to consult with your bindery services company early in the planning stage to make sure your layout is compatible for both binding methods. The most common problem with combo jobs is punching into type on the mechanical binding portion of the job. The gutter margins required for Wire-O are greater than the grind-off margins required for perfect binding.
Be safe. Plan your combo job with the help of your PROFESSIONAL finishing advisor: E & M Bindery!
