PERFECT BINDING TIPS
Cover Layouts. You’ll get better results if you let your bindery have a cover “glue trap.” This means your cover’s foot trim margin should be at least 1/4" more than those of your signatures. The face and head trims should remain the same. To maintain maximum glue adhesion, ink, varnish and UV coatings shouldn't enter the hinge score or spine areas by more than 1/16".
Spine color break alignment is impossible if the book block isn't the same thickness as the printed spine area. Anytime you have color breaks registering to spine edges, don't guess. Bulking dummies show you how wide spine copy should be. For best quality, run your cover grain long (parallel to the spine).
NEW AUTOMATIC PLASTIC COIL EQUIPMENT INSTALLED
E & M Bindery recently upgraded its mechanical binding department with a newly installed Sterling Coilmaster II, which is a complete, inline, plastic coil binding machine. It works like this: Plastic filament is fed into the coilmaker, forming plastic coil binding elements which then are automatically fed into the Coilmaster II. The coil is automatically spun into the book from the first hole onwards. After insertion, the coil is cut and crimped automatically, yielding books at the rate of 500-700/hour. Plastic coil binding elements are available in a wide array of standard colors and can even be specially ordered with a PMS match. Coil sizes range from 8mm to 23mm.
